Training update!

Ridley HallTerm is almost six weeks old now so this is a brief update about college life for those that are interested! One of our biggest struggles is not missing you all too much so it’s really good to have a chance to tell you our news and thanks to all who do come here to read our posts and look at our photos.

My studies are going very well. This term I am taking classes in church history, ethics, mission and christology (the study of Jesus) as well as ‘Life and Service’ which is a kind of catch-all course for various practical and pastoral things. I have four essays due for the end of term… crikey! So the work is piling up, the books to read are just getting more and more of a mountain on my desk and there is lots to do and it’s proving tough to keep up, especially with the demands of being a dad and trying to help Kerry look after Nathanael and Bethya.

Quite apart from the academic work, I have to do all sorts of things in Ridley itself. From leading morning prayer through taking my turn on creche duty to washing coffee mugs after lunch so it’s pretty usual for the day to disappear before you know what has happened.

I have also been attached to a church called St. George’s in Chesterton which is a suburb of Cambridge. So, as a family, we go there each Sunday and over the next two years I will be involved in various roles to gain experience as well as (hopefully) do some good things at St. George’s and bless them there. It’s quite a different sort of church to St. Matt’s so we are learning new things all the time.

I have also been told that I will do a stint with the RAF chaplains next year in order to learn more about being a vicar in different contexts so that should be very interesting. Apparently, I will even have to do a sort of boot-camp like the regular soldiers so I think I had better get fit and fast! I also have to do a placement next year that goes on for four weeks and in which he will be in a church full-time, shadowing the clergy there so watch this space. Who knows where I will be for that one.
